What should I check when buying a motorbike from a dealer?

Ask to see the V5C logbook and confirm it matches the bike. Run an HPI check to confirm there is no outstanding finance or insurance write-off marker. Check the service history and mileage are consistent. A test ride and a pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic are both worthwhile before you commit.

What is the difference between a main dealer and an independent?

A main dealer is franchised to one or more manufacturers and sells new bikes under warranty, often with a fixed-price service menu. An independent dealer is not tied to a brand and usually offers a wider range of used bikes, sometimes at keener prices. Everything Motorbike lists independent and owner-run dealers first.

Can I part-exchange my current bike at a dealer?

Most dealers accept part-exchange. The dealer will value your bike against their retail price for the one you want to buy. You get a cleaner transaction but rarely the same return as a private sale. Having a realistic market valuation before you walk in strengthens your position.

What consumer rights do I have when buying a motorbike from a dealer?

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a motorbike bought from a dealer must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If a fault appears within 30 days you can ask for a full refund. Between 30 days and six months, the dealer gets one opportunity to repair or replace before you can claim a refund. After six months the burden of proof shifts to you, but your rights continue for up to six years in England and Wales. These rights apply to dealer sales but not to private sales.
