Specialist motorcycle insurers structure policies around how bikes are actually owned and ridden: year-round commuting, seasonal use, track days, classics and modified machines. A specialist provider is more likely to offer agreed value on a classic, laid-up storage cover, and multi-bike policies than a general insurer.

What types of motorbike insurance are there in the UK?

Third party only is the minimum required by law and covers damage or injury you cause to others. Third party, fire and theft adds cover for your own bike if it is stolen or damaged by fire. Fully comprehensive covers damage to your own bike as well, and is often the best-value option for newer or more valuable machines.

What affects the cost of motorcycle insurance?

Main factors include your age and riding experience, the bike's engine size and value, your annual mileage, where the bike is kept overnight, your claims history and the level of cover you choose. Fitting an approved alarm or ground anchor can reduce premiums, as can completing a post-test course such as the Enhanced Rider Scheme.

Can I ride another motorcycle on my own insurance?

Some comprehensive policies include a riding other motorcycles (ROM) extension, but most modern policies do not, or restrict any extension to third party cover only. You need to check your specific policy schedule. Where ROM cover exists, it typically applies only to bikes you do not own and only if the other bike is already insured by its owner. It does not usually extend to hired motorcycles.

Do I need motorbike insurance if the bike is SORN?

A motorcycle declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) cannot legally be ridden on a public road and does not legally require third party insurance under the Road Traffic Act. However, your bike remains at risk of theft, fire and accidental damage while in storage. Many owners hold a laid-up or stored bike policy for that protection. Insurance must be in place before you ride again if the SORN is lifted.

What is a motorcycle no-claims discount?

A no-claims discount (also called a no-claims bonus, or NCD) is a reduction in your premium for each year you complete without making a fault claim. Motorcycle NCD is earned and applied separately from car NCD and cannot be transferred between vehicle types. Most insurers offer up to five years of NCD, with discounts of 30 to 60 percent depending on the provider. Some policies offer NCD protection, which keeps your discount after a single claim in exchange for a slightly higher premium.
